阿拉莫大学' Board approves Juneteenth as official 区 holiday

At their regular meeting July 27, the M8体育APP 校董会 adopted Juneteenth, which falls on June 19 every year, as an official M8体育APP holiday. The board’s action is in keeping with the district’s commitment to equity 和 diversity 和 its mission of “empowering our diverse communities for success.”

The first observance will be held on Monday, 6月20日, 2022 with the closure of all M8体育APP sites.  

Juneteenth commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States. 6月19日, 1865, Union soldiers l和ed in Galveston, 德州, 和 shared the news that slavery had ended – more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Black Americans 和 others have celebrated Juneteenth as a day of freedom 和 the beginning of a more hopeful future.

On June 18, 2021, President Joseph R. 小拜登. issued a Proclamation to establish Juneteenth as the nation’s newest national holiday. This proclamation was read at the board meeting before the board voted on the adoption of the holiday. 在宣言中, the President said “I call upon the people of the United States to acknowledge 和 celebrate the end of the Civil War 和 the emancipation of Black Americans, 和 commit together to eradicate systemic racism that still undermines our founding ideals 和 collective prosperity.”

“Adoption of Juneteenth as an official 阿拉莫大学 holiday allows the district, its colleges 和 its employees to commemorate 和 celebrate the end of slavery in the United States fully 和 forever,” said 阿拉莫大学 校董会 Chair Dr. 基因斯普拉格. “As President Biden said in his proclamation, 在它对自由的庆祝中, Juneteenth is a day that should be recognized by all Americans,’”他补充道.

“The annual remembrances of this day are befitting 和 important for all members of a college district family that values equity 和 diversity 和 proudly includes St. Philip’s 大学, a Historically Black 大学,” said 阿拉莫大学 Chancellor Dr. 迈克•弗洛, “In keeping with our mission 和 our values, 和, in light of the weight of history, the board 和 the district leadership of the M8体育APP 和 its colleges have rededicated themselves as advocates 和 champions for our communities of color—especially the African-American community. This is a key component of that rededication,” he added.
